When agriculture was no longer enough to earn a living, people in Gehlenbeck began to roll cigars. In this reminds today's monument on the beautiful village square.

In Gehlenbeck many small farmers and hirelings could not live from agriculture alone, in home work from 1860 cigars were rolled. Up to nine factories provided bread and work for the families in addition to agriculture. Many Gehlenbeckers had at least one goat in the stable, it was the "cow of the little man". The "thick stone" has been proven to have been located on this spot before 1900 and for decades was the meeting place of the Gehlenbeck youth and the center of the village.

Tip: Culture and customs of past times are documented in a restored 200-year-old half-timbered house, the "Gehrmker Hius" . It is located just a few houses to the east, on the B 65. Also nearby is the Gothic St. Nicholas Church, it was built around the end of the 15th century.
